Project Roots
I find family trees pretty fascinating, and have always admired those who have spent the time to research their ancestors. My grandma is one of those people, and she did a lot of work to put together a bit of her family tree. For example, she discovered that a great great grandfather of mine jumped off a french whaling ship of the coast of California and swam to shore, later meeting his wife and having some kids that ended up leading to my existence. I'm also lucky that someone on my Mom's side (the swimming frenchman is on my Dad's side) did some similar work for that line. So as I start my own research, I have a huge head start.
Project Roots is my effort to learn a bit more about where I come from. I have two goals: the first is to see how many lines I can get to leave the country; the second is to find more interesting stories, like that of Guy Omnes, my AWOL forefather. I recognize that my family line is not particularly exciting. With a few exceptions, it's a series of white people making more white people in the United States. But I'm hoping to find some flavor, some anecdotes, and maybe even some news-making ancestors. Let's see what I find.

Hey! First of all, I am so fascinated/inspired by this site! It's refreshing to see something besides "here's a funny cat video that you can find on 50,000 other websites, but i'm your friend so you'll go here first!" (that's basically my website...). Second of all, I HIGHLY recommend Geni.com. My family started using is a few years ago and while it took just about that long to catch on, it has reconnected me with SO many members around the world (especially in Israel, where most of my family lives). Besides being a super easy-to-use family tree service, it's good for reminding you about your great aunt once removed's birthday or anniversary or what-have-you and it's SO easy to share pictures and videos on there. Seriously, if you haven't heard about it, I really recommend using it. I recently switched to the Pro version, but it's only because I got greedy about the stats of my family (like, "what's the average number of children people have in your family" and stupid stuff like that), and you can do pretty much everything in the basic version.
Anywho, good luck!
