Project Yearly
In the book Earth Abides, a band of Apocolypse survivors begin the practice of naming each year by the significant event of the year; for example: the year Joey learned to read (don't get me started on why every kid in this band didn't learn to read, but that's an argument for me and the fictitious leader). Despite the often poor choice of events to signify, I liked the idea of connecting years to memories. Recently, I've wondered if I could do the same thing for my life.
This project, Project Yearly, is my attempt to connect the calendar years of my life to at least one significant event for each year. The idea is to catch up on the first 33 calendar years I've passed through, then add new year signifiers moving forward.
I do have a few concerns about this project, namely:
- Choosing just one event (or even two) may limit my ability to remember other significant things from that year in the future;
- There will be a number of years, particularly early ones, in which I have no memory of key events, or in which there weren't any key events;
- That I may need to wait a period of time before I can choose the most significant event of the previous year, considering that significance in large part is determined by its future effects.
Despite these concerns, I will start the project and see where it takes me.
